Underpriced Resale Data

Some of our guides show numbers labeled "Underpriced data". They come from items people checked in the Underpriced app: what the item was, the price on its tag and, when matching sold listings turned up, what it sells for. Here is how we count them and what we leave out.

The short version

  • The data covers items resellers chose to check in Underpriced and the price they were asked, not every thrift store price.
  • Every number combines at least 5 checks from at least 3 different people, and shows its count (n).
  • Every number says its dates: Jul–Sep 2026 when that stretch has enough checks, otherwise Apr–Sep 2026.
  • We never publish anyone’s photos, listings, notes or anything that could identify them.

What a check records

A check is one item someone looked up in the app from a photo or a listing. For each one we keep:

What it was
The item the app identified and its category, like Levi’s jeans or Pyrex.
The price they were asked
The price on the tag or the one the person typed in, US dollar checks only. Checks without a price still count as checks, just not toward the asked price.
What it sells for
We only count it when matching sold listings priced the item. It’s our estimate from those sales, not a raw marketplace price.
The verdict
How the app rated the item at that price: Hot Deal, Good Deal, Fair, Pass or Bad Deal.
Projected profit
What would be left after the platform fee, payment processing and shipping, for checks that had both a price and a sold-based value.

How we count

Everyone counts
Every customer account counts in full, including people who check a lot of items. Our own and test accounts don’t.
One item, one check
The same person checking the same item again within a week counts once.
At least 3 people
Each number needs at least 5 checks from at least 3 different people. Below that we don’t show the number, and every number we show has its count (n) beside it.
Medians, not averages
One $900 find can’t drag a median around. Where we show a range, it’s the middle half: the 25th to 75th percentile.
Each number has its own dates
We use Jul–Sep 2026 when that stretch has enough checks for a number, and Apr–Sep 2026 when it doesn’t. One brand can show asked prices from Jul–Sep 2026 and a value from Apr–Sep 2026, so the dates sit beside every number.

What we leave out

  • Lots and bundles. A brand number describes one item, so a "lot of 12" or a mixed box doesn’t count.

  • Look-alikes. A Ford Fiesta isn’t Fiestaware and a coach jacket isn’t Coach, so we check the category as well as the name.

  • Unsure identifications. If the app wasn’t confident what the item was, it stays out of brand numbers.

  • Placeholder prices. A price of $0.01 is a stand-in, not a real tag, so it counts as no price.

  • Barcode lookups. A barcode lookup on its own isn’t an item check, so it never counts.

The numbers so far

In Jul–Sep 2026, 1,318 people checked 10,901 items in Underpriced. These are the ten biggest categories. A dot means too few people or checks to show a number.

Medians. "Asked" is the price on the tag or the one people typed, from checks that had a price. "Sells for" only counts checks where matching sold listings priced the item. "Rated worth buying" is the share of priced checks the app rated a Hot Deal or Good Deal.

When our own data is thin: dated sold samples

Some items aren’t checked in Underpriced often enough for numbers of our own. For those, a guide shows a dated sample of eBay US sold listings instead, labeled with its dates and count, like "eBay sold listings, Jul 6 to Oct 3, 2026, n=548". The rules:

  • Item price before shipping.
  • Best-offer sales are left out, because eBay doesn’t show the price that was accepted.
  • Lots, mixed sets, parts, lids sold alone, reproductions and re-releases are left out.
  • A median needs at least 5 sales. With fewer, we show a dot or say so.
  • We keep statistics only (count, median, middle half, dates), never listing photos or text.
  • Each search returns the most recent sales first, so busy items cover the last few weeks and rare ones the whole stretch. The dates sit beside every number.

Your privacy

We only ever publish combined numbers. No one’s photos, listings, notes, chats or account details appear anywhere, and a number covering fewer than 3 people is never shown. Our Privacy Policy and Terms say the same.
