Where the code is on a Nike tag

Shoes: the size tag inside the tongue (sometimes behind the elastic or on the inside wall), and the box label. Clothes, hats and bags: a small white tag under the care labels, near the bottom seam. Its top line is the season and production months, like SP17 08 11; the style code sits below it.

  1. 1. Factory code. Two or three letters. Type them above to see the factory.

How to read a Nike style code

Men's, women's and kids' versions of the same shoe have different codes. A white Air Force 1 is CW2288-111 for men, DD8959-100 for women and DH2920-111 for big kids. A size with a C (like 9C) is a toddler size, and a Y (like 5Y) is a big kids' size.

The first of the three digits after the dash is the shoe's main color, usually the upper. The other two don't map to exact colors, so search the full code to see the real colorway.

Nike factory codes

The two or three letters in a corner of the size tag are the factory. These come from Nike's own list of its shoe factories. The same shoe is often made in more than one, so the code can differ between pairs. What should always match is the country: if the code says Vietnam and the tag says “Made in Indonesia”, look closer before you buy.

1980s tongue-tag letters (from collectors)

From a collector who got them from an early Nike developer. TY (Tong Yang, Korea) also shows up in auction records. Nike never published a list, so treat these as leads.

Real or fake: what the tag can tell you

  • The code should show the same shoe and colorway as the pair in your hand.
  • The box label and the size tag should agree on style code, size and UPC.
  • The factory code's country should match the “Made in” line.
  • Production dates years before the model existed are a red flag.

What the tag can't prove

  • A real code, UPC or QR code doesn't prove a pair is real. Fakes copy all three.
  • A code that doesn't show up online doesn't prove a fake. Old and regional codes often don't.
  • The letters at the start of a code (DD, FQ, HF) don't tell you the year.
  • The color of the size tag means nothing on shoes.

UPCs and samples

Every style, color and size gets its own UPC, so a size 10 and a size 10.5 of the same shoe have different barcodes. Type a UPC above to check its last digit. A barcode that finds the right shoe is a good sign, not proof, because fake labels copy real numbers.

Real samples usually say so: “SAMPLE”, “PROMO SAMPLE” or “not for resale” on the insole or tag, or SS after the factory letters on old tongue tags. Salesman samples were often a men's 9 or women's 7. A 9C is just a toddler size. And be careful with “sample” listings: sellers use the word to explain away flaws on fakes.
