Shopify profit per order after recurring overhead

Use this calculator to decide whether a Shopify storefront leaves enough profit after costs that marketplace calculators usually omit. It allocates the monthly plan and app bill across expected orders, then subtracts payment fees and item-level operating costs.

The selected-plan result makes plan cost and Shopify Payments percentage and fixed fees editable. Shopify pricing is localized and online US rates can differ by card type, so copy the exact current values from the store admin before relying on the result.

This is a unit-economics sensitivity model, not a sales forecast. Entered buyer tax is included in the payment-fee basis but excluded from revenue. Duties, chargebacks, refunds, Shopify POS rates, currency conversion, and app-specific usage charges remain excluded unless entered as a reserve.

  • Order revenue: discounted item price plus buyer-paid shipping.
  • Costs: payment fees, Shopify third-party transaction fee when applicable, COGS, shipping, packaging, marketing, return reserve, plan, and apps.
  • Outputs: net profit per order, net margin, modeled monthly contribution for a repeated representative order, payment-fee total, allocated overhead, and break-even order value.
  • Decision: compare plans at the same order volume before paying for lower card rates or additional features.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate profit on a Shopify order?

Start with the discounted item price plus any buyer-paid shipping. Subtract payment processing, any Shopify third-party transaction fee, COGS, seller-paid shipping, packaging, marketing, a return reserve, and the per-order share of monthly plan and app costs.

Does Shopify charge a transaction fee with Shopify Payments?

Shopify Payments orders use the plan-specific payment-processing rate without the additional third-party transaction fee. When an external payment provider is used, model both that provider fee and Shopify’s plan-specific third-party transaction fee.

When is a higher Shopify plan cheaper?

A higher plan can become cheaper at sufficient order value and volume because card rates and third-party transaction fees decline, but its monthly subscription is higher. Compare the same order mix across plans instead of upgrading from rate percentage alone.

What costs should a reseller include?

Include COGS, fulfillment, packaging, payment fees, ads or customer-acquisition cost, expected returns, apps, and the monthly plan. Add taxes, duties, currency conversion, chargebacks, or special app usage as custom reserves when they apply.
