Gold Resale Value and Buyer-Payout Calculator
Calculate a USD gold melt floor from weight, karat, non-gold weight, dated spot, and payout rate, then compare up to three actual buyer offers.
What this tool helps you do
Calculate a gold jewelry metal floor and compare buyer offers after karat, known non-gold weight, a user-entered dated spot price, and buyer spread.
Interactive inputs and calculations load after the app boots. Use this prerendered preview to understand what the tool covers before opening the live experience.

Gold resale value starts with a dated, verifiable metal floor
This calculator answers a narrow transaction question: what is the theoretical USD metal value of confirmed gold alloy, and how does an actual buyer offer compare after a stated payout spread? It does not estimate designer, antique, gemstone, or collectible premiums.
Select only confirmed solid gold alloy for melt math. The FTC explains that 24 karat is pure gold and that an 18K item is 18 parts gold to six parts other metal. Plated, gold-filled, overlay, and rolled-gold-plate construction must not be valued by treating gross weight as a solid gold alloy.
Subtract only known non-gold weight. Stones, steel springs, watch movements, clasps, solder, and other parts can make gross jewelry weight larger than the gold-bearing mass. When you cannot separate or support that deduction, treat a gross-weight result as an upper bound and obtain a qualified test or buyer assay.
The tool intentionally has no live-price default. Enter the USD spot or benchmark value you checked, record its date, and compare actual dollar offers. A benchmark price for fine troy ounces is not a promise that a retail scrap buyer will pay 100% of melt.
- Pure gold grams = gold-bearing grams × karat purity.
- Fine troy ounces = pure gold grams ÷ 31.1034768.
- Theoretical melt = fine troy ounces × user-entered USD spot price.
- Modeled payout = theoretical melt × buyer payout percentage.
- Buyer offer percentage = entered offer ÷ theoretical melt.
Common karat fractions
Karat describes gold parts out of 24. Hallmarks and buyer tests still require construction and authenticity judgment.
| Mark | Gold fraction used by the tool | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 24/24 = 100% | Pure gold input; verify item construction |
| 18K | 18/24 = 75% | Do not include known stone or non-gold weight |
| 14K | 14/24 ≈ 58.333% | A 14K mark alone is not an independent assay |
| 10K | 10/24 ≈ 41.667% | Confirm the item is not plated or filled |
Why buyer offers differ from melt
A buyer may price assay uncertainty, refining loss, lot size, shipping, settlement time, payment method, and operating margin into the quote. Compare the final amount you will actually receive, not only the advertised percentage.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate gold resale value from karat and weight?
Convert the gold-bearing weight to grams, multiply by karat divided by 24, divide pure gold grams by 31.1034768 to get fine troy ounces, and multiply by the dated USD spot price. Apply the buyer payout percentage only after calculating theoretical melt.
What percentage of gold melt value is a buyer offering?
Divide the final dollar offer by the calculator’s theoretical melt value and multiply by 100. Confirm whether the offer already includes assay, refining, shipping, wire, or settlement deductions before comparing buyers.
Can I use gross jewelry weight for a gold melt estimate?
Only when the entire entered mass is confirmed gold alloy. Deduct known gemstone and non-gold component weight. If the construction is uncertain, treat gross-weight math as an upper bound and get qualified testing.
Can I use this calculator for gold plated or gold-filled jewelry?
No. Plated, filled, overlay, and rolled-gold-plate pieces contain a gold layer or fraction over another material. Their gross weight cannot be multiplied by a solid-gold karat fraction.
Does gold jewelry always sell for melt value?
No. A buyer may pay less than melt because of spread and processing costs, while designer, antique, gemstone, or collectible jewelry may sell above melt. Use sold comparisons and specialist review before scrapping an intact piece.
