Used mattress compliance and local-sale economics
This checker is compliance triage, not a legal opinion or automatic permission to list. It combines the CPSC mattress label and recall screen with verified state-rule paths for California, Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania. Every other state returns an explicit hold and a regulator-verification workflow.
The federal screen asks whether the exact item was checked for recalls, whether its manufacture period is known, and whether a post-July-1-2007 mattress retains the permanent English flammability label. CPSC recommends that mattresses made before 2007 not be resold and says a recalled product cannot lawfully be sold.
The marketplace result is deliberately conditional. Craigslist explicitly prohibits recalled items and unsanitized bedding. OfferUp, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and direct-sale routes still require current policy, lawful condition, accurate disclosure, and state and local compliance.
Value comes from a user-entered current local comp—not a national percentage of retail. The buy ceiling subtracts platform fees, approved treatment, mileage, labor, supplies, storage, disposal reserve, and required profit from the supported sale price.

Is it legal to sell a used mattress?
Often only after the applicable federal safety, state treatment and labeling, local, seller-type, and platform requirements are satisfied. The answer is not a nationwide yes or no, so the checker returns a hold when the state path or seller evidence is not verified.
Can I sell a mattress made before 2007?
CPSC recommends that mattresses made before 2007 not be resold. For mattresses made after July 1, 2007, its reseller guide says a permanent, conspicuous, legible English label certifying compliance must be present.
Does steam cleaning make a mattress legal to resell?
Not automatically. States can specify approved treatment methods, licenses, permits, labels, and records. Household cleaning should not be described as regulator-approved sanitization without evidence.
How much is a used mattress worth?
Use current local sold or completed evidence for the same brand, model, size, age band, condition, and pickup radius. Then subtract platform fees, approved treatment, hauling, labor, supplies, storage, disposal risk, acquisition cost, and required profit. The checker does not invent a national percentage of retail.
Can a recalled mattress be sold if it looks fine?
No. CPSC says selling a recalled product is unlawful. If a recall provides a remedy, complete and document it before evaluating any later sale.
