Reseller SKU format that helps pick, pack, and audit inventory
A useful reseller SKU is an internal code for locating and managing inventory. It should be short, unique, consistent, and tied to fields the seller already has: bin, source, category, brand, purchase date, and sequence number.
Shopify distinguishes SKUs from barcode fields, and GS1 distinguishes internal codes from global product identifiers such as GTIN, UPC, and EAN. This tool generates internal reseller SKUs and QR payloads; it does not issue official product identifiers.
The selected QR PNG is rendered locally in the browser rather than sent to an image API. It can encode the internal inventory record or a validated HTTP(S) live-listing URL. Keep COGS in the CSV or spreadsheet unless the label is strictly internal, preserve the white quiet zone, and test-scan one final printed label before producing a batch.
Generated codes are deterministic, so the tool cannot know whether a sequence was already used in your store. Keep one sequence ledger and check uniqueness before importing or printing; duplicate SKUs can break inventory tracking and integrations.
- Locator SKU: bin, category, brand, purchase date, and sequence for pick-pack accuracy.
- Barcode-friendly code: compact uppercase string with no spaces or punctuation.
- QR label: locally generated PNG encoding the selected internal record or its live listing URL.
- Batch workflow: select any generated row to preview, download, or print its QR label.
- CSV export: one downloadable row per generated label so spreadsheet inventory and marketplace listing notes can stay aligned.
SKU versus barcode versus GTIN
Use a generated SKU to run your own inventory system. Use an official product identifier only when the marketplace asks for a UPC, EAN, or GTIN and you have a legitimate one for that product.
| Code type | What it means | Reseller use |
|---|---|---|
| Internal SKU | A seller-created code used to track inventory. | Put it in the custom SKU field, label, pick list, and spreadsheet. |
| QR or barcode payload | A scannable encoding of a value or data string. | Scan your internal SKU or payload during receiving and packing. |
| GTIN / UPC / EAN | A global product identifier used for standardized product identity. | Use only when the product legitimately has that identifier. |

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a good SKU system for a reseller inventory business?
A good reseller SKU is unique, consistent, short enough to type, and tied to retrieval fields such as bin, category, brand, source, purchase date, and sequence number. Avoid spaces and special characters so the code works cleanly in spreadsheets, marketplace SKU fields, and scanner workflows.
Is a reseller SKU the same as a UPC, GTIN, EAN, or barcode?
No. A reseller SKU is an internal inventory code. A GTIN, UPC, or EAN is a standardized product identifier, and a barcode or QR code is a scannable way to encode data. This tool creates internal SKUs and payloads; it does not create official product identifiers.
Should cost of goods be printed on reseller QR labels?
Only include COGS in QR payloads on labels that stay internal. If a buyer or helper might see the label, keep cost in the CSV or inventory spreadsheet and use the SKU as the join field.
Does the SKU generator create an actual QR image?
Yes. Select any generated row and render a downloadable or printable QR PNG locally in the browser. The QR can contain the internal inventory record or a validated live listing URL. Test-scan the final printed label because contrast, quiet zone, printer quality, damage, and label material affect scanning.
Does the generator guarantee that every SKU is unique?
No. It creates deterministic sequences but cannot inspect SKUs already in your store. Keep a sequence ledger and verify uniqueness before import or printing; Shopify warns that duplicate SKUs can cause inventory and integration problems.
How do batch SKUs prevent shipping errors?
Batch SKUs give each similar item its own sequence while keeping bin, source, date, category, and brand visible. That one-to-one link between listing, shelf, and spreadsheet lowers the chance of shipping the wrong size, color, or condition variant.
