The part after the dash is the style number, which names the bag. From 1994 on, the part before it is the month, year and factory.

Before 1994
123-4567
Numbers only. It's a serial for that one bag, so it doesn't name the style or the year. Many bags from before the 1980s have none at all.
1994 to 2003
K8P-9870
Month letter (K = October), year digit (8 = 1998), factory (P), then the style number after the dash: 9870.
2004 to 2019
B1980-38124
Month letter, two-digit year (19 = 2019), two-character factory code, then the style number. Style numbers went to five digits around 2006.
2020 and newer
M2478-C8562
Same front half (M = December, 24 = 2024). The style number can now start with letters, like C8562 or CI032.

Blank creed? From 2014 to about 2016 Coach put the number on a small white fabric tag in a seam or inside pocket instead. Guides differ on the start: ShopGoodwill says 2014, LoveToKnow late 2014.
An F before the style number (F15510) means the bag was made for Coach Outlet. It is real Coach, so price it against outlet bags, not full-price ones. Newer outlet bags use letter codes too; check Coach Outlet.
A number that decodes cleanly doesn't prove the bag is real: fakes copy real numbers, and Coach doesn't authenticate bags bought secondhand.

Month letters run A (January) to M (December), skipping I. One-digit years run 4 (1994) to 3 (2003); two-digit years start in 2004.

Five creed codes, read

No number on your bag?

Check for the small white tag first: from 2014 to about 2016 Coach often left the creed blank and put the number there. A missing number isn't proof of a fake. Plenty of real Coach has none:

Small pieces like wallets, wristlets, pouches, card cases and coin purses often have no creed number.
Some 1990s pebbled leather bags, including Dakotas and some Sheridans, have none.
Many bags from before the 1980s have none.
A P before the style number marks a pilot (trial-run) bag, and 00000 a sample or limited run.

If the seller won't send clear creed photos, pass or lower your buy price. When you list a bag with no number, say so in the listing.

How do I look up a Coach serial number?

Find the leather creed patch inside the bag and type the line after "No." The part after the dash is the style number, which names the bag. On bags made from 1994 on, the part before it gives the month, year and factory.

What does the number on a Coach creed mean?

Before 1994 it is digits only, a serial for that one bag that names no style. From 1994 it is a month letter (A is January, I is skipped), the year, a factory code, then the style number after the dash. Since about 2020 the style number can start with letters, like C8562.

Is there an official Coach serial number database?

No. Coach publishes no lookup and says it does not authenticate bags bought on eBay. Our list pairs each style number with a name we checked on coach.com, Coach Outlet, a published guide or resale listings that agree, and a matching number never proves a bag is real.

How do I find out what my Coach bag is worth?

Search sold listings for the style number, not the whole creed code, then match the size, leather and condition. A style number that starts with F was made for Coach Outlet, so compare it with outlet bags.

Does a missing Coach serial number prove a fake?

No. Wallets, wristlets, pouches and other small pieces often have no creed number, some 1990s Dakota and Sheridan bags have none, and from 2014 to about 2016 the number is often on a small white tag instead. A missing number means you need clearer photos of everything else before you buy.

What this lookup doesn't do

It doesn't authenticate a bag. Fakes copy real creed numbers, and Coach says it doesn't authenticate items bought on eBay. It reads the number and names the style so you know what to compare and what to search.
